Once your LASIK procedure has been scheduled, Dr. Montgomery will discuss preoperative and postoperative care instructions with you to make sure you are adequately prepared for the procedure, including:
Another key step in preparing for LASIK eye surgery is to make arrangements with a friend or family member for transportation on the day of your procedure, since you won’t be permitted to drive yourself home.
You will be offered a sedative to help with anxiety and to help you sleep afterwards. LASIK vision correction surgery will begin with the administration of local anesthetic eye drops for optimal comfort throughout the LASIK surgery. Dr. Montgomery will then place a speculum over your eye so you won’t need to worry about blinking during the procedure. Once your eyes are prepared, he will use the bladeless Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser to make a thin flap incision in the cornea. As one of the fastest lasers in the market, this advanced technology safely and gently creates a clean flap and helps reduce stress on the cornea.
Once the corneal flap is created, Dr. Montgomery will gently fold the flap to the side and use an Alcon WaveLight® EX500 excimer laser, the fastest excimer laser in the market, to reshape the cornea and correct your impaired vision. With a map of your eye programmed into the laser, it will administer quick pulses of concentrated light and remove excess corneal tissue.
Once the cornea is successfully reshaped, Dr. Montgomery will complete the procedure by folding the flap back into place. Since your eye will heal on its own, no sutures are required. The entire process in the laser suite typically takes less than 15 minutes.
Once your laser eye surgery is complete, we will place protective glasses over your eyes to help prevent light sensitivity and to remind you not to rub your eyes. You will need to have someone available to drive you to and from your LASIK surgery. Keeping the eyes closed as much as possible for the first few hours facilitates healing. For the first 24 hours, rest your eyes as much as possible and avoid heavy visual activities, such as watching TV, reading, and computer use.
It is not uncommon to experience blurriness, light sensitivity, and the feeling of something in your eye for the first 48 hours after LASIK. Although you will notice immediate improvement in vision, results from LASIK eye surgery can take several months to finalize. To ensure optimal recovery and results from LASIK refractive surgery, you should attend your necessary follow-up appointments and follow all postoperative instructions carefully.
