The EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer® Lens), a lens implant that is micro-thin and 100% compatible with the human body. The removable EVO ICL is placed in front of the eye’s natural lens to correct astigmatism and nearsightedness (myopia). Who is a Candidate for EVO ICL?

When you come to Montgomery Eye Care for a vision correction consultation, Dr. Jim Montgomery will evaluate your eye health and discuss your vision needs. Even if you have thin corneas or larger correction needs, you could still be a candidate for the EVO ICL.

In general, candidates for EVO ICL:

  • Are between the ages of 21 and 45
  • Have nearsightedness (myopia) or astigmatism
  • Have a steady eye prescription (no changes for at least one year)
  • Are ready to see the world clearly with little to no dependence on glasses or contacts

Preparing for EVO ICL

The main thing you need to do to prepare for EVO ICL is to decide that you are ready to enjoy visual freedom. Once Dr. Montgomery pronounces you a good candidate, your procedure will be scheduled and you will receive detailed pre- and postoperative instructions.

EVO ICL Surgery: What to Expect

The EVO ICL procedure takes only 20-30 minutes per eye and is performed at our accredited ambulatory surgery center, The Eye Surgery Center of Colorado. The procedure and recovery are associated with little to no discomfort in most cases.

Before the procedure begins, you will be offered intravenous medicine to help with anxiety and to keep you comfortable during the surgery. Anesthetic eye drops will be applied to help ensure your comfort. Dr. Montgomery will use a device called a speculum to hold your eyes open so you won’t need to worry about blinking. Dr. Montgomery creates a tiny opening and positions the Implantable Collamer Lens in front of the natural lens of your eye. After a brief recovery period, you will be ready to be driven home by a family member or friend.

Most of Dr. Montgomery’s patients need very little downtime after their EVO ICLs are placed. You will notice an improvement in your vision on the day of your procedure! Frequently Asked Questions About EVO ICL

Will I be able to feel the implanted lens in my eye? Will other people be able to see it?

The answer to both of these questions is no. Once it is implanted, the EVO ICL feels no different than your natural eye and observers won’t be able to see it. Unlike contact lenses, you will not be able to feel the lens.

Will I need reading glasses after my EVO ICL placement?

EVO ICL is designed to treat nearsightedness and astigmatism. It is possible that later in life you may need reading glasses after placement because age-related near vision loss (presbyopia) is a normal part of the eye’s aging process that affects everybody beginning in their 40’s.

Is the EVO ICL safe?

The EVO ICL has been proven safe and effective by a number of studies that led to its approval by the FDA. Even so, there are risks and complications associated with any surgical procedure. Complications and side effects of the EVO ICL, though rare, may include:
